NFT Atlanta East Lake

East Lake

Agnes Scott is a premier women’s college with a gorgeous campus. East Lake is home to Atlanta’s first country club, and golf is still a focal point, with a private and a public course. East Lake is a shining example of good ‘urban public policy.’ Translation: they cleaned up the neighborhood for the newcomers without kicking out the longtime locals. Former low-income projects have been successfully transformed into mixed-income developments.

Trackside Tavern
Trackside is where vampires come out to play. If you’re hanging out in downtown Decatur and hear last call, pay your tab quick, and stumble across the train tracks. Trackside has managed to avoid much of the yuppiness that seems to be infecting much of Atlanta’s once-hip neighborhoods (including Decatur). They serve food late, got pool tables, darts, and an air hockey table, and the back patio sends up enough smoke to keep firemen turning in their sleep. With its elegant shabbiness, relaxed-no-matter-how-crazy-it-gets bartenders, and diverse mix of patrons, going to Trackside is sort of like going to the circus; you’re not sure who or what you’re going to see, but you’ll definitely be telling people about your experience the next day.

The skirt lamp that sits in the window overlooking McDonough Street isn’t the only thing that makes Lightroom Studios a truly unique place. Complete with twenty-five-foot ceilings, sleek furniture, and killer artwork, this Decatur workspace is something to behold. Not only are the three masterminds behind the place great-looking, they’re also talented—mind-bogglingly so—and extremely pleasant to be around. Whether you need an architect, a graphic designer, or a photographer, these are your guys. Creative juices you’re looking to explore will be legitimately welcomed and ultimately brought to fruition. On my first visit, I was invited by Lightroom creator Bill Carpenter to a steak BBQ on the roof. He made a huge sirloin lunch then excused himself to eat hot dogs with his daughter at school. They’re professional and confident in their work, yet completely unpretentious and humble. Visit their website—it’s all the convincing you’ll need.

In my opinion, Agnes Scott College is one of the nation’s prettiest campuses. On a crisp, clear day, walk around the manicured grounds and gaze upon the deep red brick architecture, gothic windows, and fine detailing. The prestigious liberal arts university is surrounded by mammoth oak trees and regal magnolias, and is a perfect walking detour to downtown Decatur (to the Cherry Museum, see below). The Alumnae Garden is a quiet spot for reading, deep conversation, and reflection. Parking is available on the South Candler Street side of the school.

Oakhurst Community Garden Project
Nestled in the picturesque Oakhurst neighbourhood is a garden of gentleness, respect, and verdant foliage. The Oakhurst Community Garden sits across from Agnes Scott College and has healthy garden beds, a kaleidoscope of fragrant flora, vibrant shrubbery, and plenty of outdoor seating from which to soak it all in. This unique garden offers a range of activities to help develop your green thumb and community spirit. Originally established in response to vandalism, the garden’s goal remains to raise environmental awareness and promote knowledge, unity, and growth. Various programmes, such as hands-on vegetable gardening and the Urban Tree House Project, offer opportunities to mentor local youth. There are also numerous social gatherings, where you can listen to live music and storytelling, feast upon home grown goodies, pat the goats, and sip a martini. This indeed is a garden of delight.
