The Crucible 7/13/2010
This summer, The Crucible's annual homage to fire comes indoors with HEAT: A fire Cabaret July 15-17th. Their 56,000 sq-ft industrial arts studio is transformed into an underground fire speakeasy ablaze with hot jazz and blues by Kim Nalley and her band, featuring a host of incredible cirque and burlesque performers. Guests are invited to dress up in their 1920's finery and in between stage acts, stroll around the facility among fire sculptures, bootlegger cars, photo booths and theatrical demonstrations in blacksmithing, welding, glass flameworking, and more. Don't miss it -- more info and tix on sale: www.thecrucible.org
The Crucible's Cathedral Building Gallery of Art 7/13/2010
The current exhibition at this mid-town gallery is entitled: flux -- It's a group show of art created by faculty and staff of The Crucible, so it really showcases the skills they teach there. The collection includes sculptural works in glass, metal, wood, and other mediums by sixteen artisans, ranging from weird alien-like shapes to exquisite jewelry.

On Saturday and Sunday, December 12th and 13th, The Crucible hosts its annual Gifty Holiday Art Sale, likely to be the Bay Area’s most unusual shopping experience. At Gifty you can shop for handcrafted holiday gifts while experiencing art in action in The Crucible’s vast West Oakland studio space where furnaces roar, sparks fly, and imagination runs wild. Enjoy hands-on activities, family-friendly fire performers, and seasonal treats throughout the day, and watch as Santa arrives in a most untraditional way. Elves and circus performers are on hand to welcome guests, and you can shop ‘til you drop among a wide array of affordable handcrafted gift items created by over 70 talented Bay Area artisans. Watch demonstrations of many of the processes the artists used to create their work, like glass blowing, metal casting, and blacksmithing. Shoppers can choose from handmade jewelry, paper products, glass creations, sculpture, clothing, ceramics and more. So much better than mall shopping - - and easy access to W. Oakland BART.
